Can’t You Be Normal?
2022
A collection of three short films: Stained, To Keep One Safe, and Can’t You Be Normal?
This film is a resigned acceptance of a woman giving into what men desire and losing herself in the process. Showing how womanhood, love, and violence are all inherently connected.
Can’t You Be Normal? is a collection of three short films that all examine feminine rage. Feminine rage is not the expression of normal anger but is described to be a raw, physiological, ancestral, and embodied response to the world. Saying enough is enough. Enough of the suffering and the compromising. Enough of making myself something I’m not for the approval from the world, more specifically from men.
I was motivated to create this film because while growing up I had this subconscious, growing anger at this system I did not understand. But now that I am older, I am no longer letting that rage stay silent. This short film was created throughout my last semester of college following the singular theme of feminine rage. Can’t You Be Normal? has a different perspective on the rules of traditional femininity: how they are ingrained in our society, and to not follow them is to allow yourself to be ostracized.
